What affects the cost of a heat pump?
The price of a heat pump depends on your home as much as the unit. Your installer gives you a written quote after seeing the house. These are the things that make the biggest difference.
Cost factors
Six things that change the cost of a heat pump
01
Size and capacity
A bedroom unit costs less than one sized for a large open-plan living area. The installer works out the kilowatts the room needs.
02
Type of heat pump
A single high-wall is the simplest job. Multi-split and ducted systems involve more equipment and more labour.
03
Pipe length
The further apart the indoor and outdoor units are, the more copper pipe and time the job needs.
04
Wall type
Weatherboard is quick to drill. Brick, block and concrete take longer.
05
Access and height
Two-storey walls, steep sections or tight spaces can mean scaffolding or extra time.
06
Switchboard
If there is no spare circuit, an electrician needs to add one. Older boards sometimes need more work.

Why the price comes after the site visit
A price given over the phone is a guess. It often changes once someone sees the pipe route, the wall and the switchboard.
A local installer visits, checks all of this, and gives you a written quote for your home. You can ask questions, compare it with what you expected, and decide in your own time.
- Written quote for your house
- Covers the unit, parts and labour
- No obligation to accept
Heat pump cost questions
Why can I not get a price online?
The same heat pump can cost quite different amounts to install in two houses. Pipe length, walls, access and the switchboard only become clear when someone sees the house. A written quote after a visit is the accurate number.
Is the quote free?
Yes. Requesting a quote through this site is free and there is no obligation to go ahead.
Can I get help with the cost?
Warmer Kiwi Homes can cover most of the cost of an approved high-wall heat pump for eligible homeowners. See our grants page for the rules.
Is it cheaper to replace an old heat pump?
Sometimes. If the old outdoor position, bracket and pipe route can be reused, the labour can be lower. The installer will tell you on the visit.
