Overview
What is a high-wall heat pump?
A high-wall split is two boxes and a copper run: a head on the indoor wall, a compressor outside, and licensed refrigerant work in between. Most New Zealand quotes are this system. It heats, cools, and dries the air. It does not heat the whole house from one head.
Capacity is in kilowatts. A bedroom is often 2.5–3.5 kW. A typical living area is 5–7 kW. Open-plan rooms, south walls, single glazing and tall villas push that up. Floor area alone is a weak guess, a specialist should walk the room.
Install is usually half a day to a day if the run is back-to-back. Brick, two-storey, long copper and a full switchboard stretch the labour. The hole and bracket from an old unit may be reusable. A badly placed 1990s head often should not be copied.
Is a high-wall right for your home?
A quick way to tell before the installer visits.
A good choice when
One room you actually live in
Lounge, open-plan, or a bedroom that will not warm. One head, one job, one outdoor unit.
A grant conversation
Warmer Kiwi Homes only funds approved high-wall units in the living area. Floor consoles and ducted are out.
A first unit or a straight swap
Fastest install. Replacement is cheaper when the outdoor pad and hole still make sense.
Consider another type when
Trying to heat the whole house
A hallway head that ‘covers everything’ does not. Use multi-split or ducted, or a second standalone split.
A wall that cannot take the head
No free wall, heritage restrictions, or a room that needs even throw, look at cassette or floor console.

High-wall heat pump questions
What size high-wall heat pump do I need?
A bedroom is often 2.5–3.5 kW. A typical Kiwi living area is 5–7 kW. Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill living rooms often need more. Insulation, glazing and a south wall all move the number. The installer sizes on site.
