Heat pump installation: what to expect
From the first site visit to the heat pump running on your wall. Here is how a typical installation works, how long it takes, and what to have ready.

Installation day
How a heat pump is installed
A standard high-wall install is usually done in half a day.
- 1
Check the room
The installer confirms where the indoor unit goes, where the outdoor unit sits, and the pipe route between them.
- 2
Drill and mount
They drill a hole through the wall and mount both units. Brick and concrete take longer than weatherboard.
- 3
Connect and test
Copper pipe, drain and power are connected, then the licensed refrigerant work is pressure tested.
- 4
Commission
The system is run on heat and cool, the drain is checked, and you are shown how to use the remote.
Before the visit
What to have ready
A few details make the site visit quicker and the quote more accurate. You do not need all of them, but they help.
- Which room or rooms you want heated
- Where you would like the indoor unit, if you have a preference
- Possible spots outside for the outdoor unit
- Easy access to your switchboard
- Body corporate rules, if you live in a unit or apartment
- Whether you think you qualify for a grant
New or replacement
Installing a new heat pump or replacing an old one
A new install means choosing where both units go and running a new power circuit if the switchboard needs one.
A replacement can be quicker if the old position, bracket and pipe route still make sense. Older units using discontinued refrigerants are usually replaced outright rather than repaired. Your installer will tell you which applies.
Heat pump installation questions
How long does a heat pump installation take?
A straightforward high-wall with the outdoor unit close by is usually half a day. Brick or concrete walls, two storeys, long pipe runs or scaffolding add time. Multi-split and ducted systems can take one to several days.
Do I need to be home?
Yes, for the site visit and on installation day. The installer needs access to the room, the outside wall and the switchboard.
Can the installer reuse my old heat pump's spot?
Often, if the old position still makes sense. The installer will check the bracket, the hole and the pipe route. A badly placed old unit is usually worth moving.
Who actually does the install?
An installer in your area. We pass the job to them. They visit, quote, install and stand behind the warranty.
Do I have to go ahead?
No. The form is free. You talk to the installer and decide.
