Overview
What is a multi-split heat pump?
A multi-split is one outdoor unit feeding more than one indoor head, usually high-walls, sometimes a mix. Each room has its own controller. You are not heating the house from the hallway.
People pick them when a body corporate will only allow one compressor, when the section has one legal pad, or when a two-storey house wants living plus bedrooms without a stack of outdoor boxes. That is a placement decision as much as a comfort one.
It is not automatically cheaper than two standalone splits. You pay for a larger outdoor unit and more complex pipework. If that outdoor unit fails, every room goes down. Ask the installer to price both options when the wall has space for two compressors.
Is a multi-split right for your home?
A quick way to tell before the installer visits.
A good choice when
One legal outdoor position
Townhouses, apartments and new terraces often have a single approved pad. Multi-split is how you still do more than one room.
Different rooms, different hours
Living area all evening, bedrooms at night. Individual setpoints beat one oversized head.
Consider another type when
Two simple rooms and plenty of wall
Two standalone splits can be cheaper, easier to service, and you keep heat in one room if the other unit dies.

Multi-split heat pump questions
Is a multi-split cheaper than two heat pumps?
Not always. Two standalone splits can land lower, and they fail independently. Multi-split wins when you only have one outdoor pad, or you want three or four rooms on one compressor.
Can I add another head later?
Sometimes, if the outdoor unit was specified with spare capacity and the pipe route is still open. Do not assume it. Say the future room on the first quote.
