Overview
What is a cassette heat pump?
A cassette sits in the ceiling grid or a bulkhead. You see a square grille. Air goes out on four sides, which is why they work in rooms that are too wide or too open for one wall head.
They need depth above the ceiling, a drain that actually falls, and more labour than a high-wall. Shops, open-plan living with no free wall, and some new builds are the usual jobs. A villa with a shallow ceiling cavity is usually the wrong house.
This is still a split system: outdoor compressor, licensed refrigerant, electrical termination. It is not a ducted whole-home system, it is one room, or one large volume, done properly.
Is a cassette right for your home?
A quick way to tell before the installer visits.
A good choice when
A wide room with no good wall
Retail, a big living volume, or a space where a high-wall would only heat one end.
You have the ceiling depth
The installer will measure that on site. No cavity, no cassette.
Consider another type when
A standard lounge with a free wall
A high-wall is cheaper, faster, and easier to service. Do not buy a cassette for the look.

Cassette heat pump questions
Do I need a cassette instead of a high-wall?
Only if the room is wide, the walls are all glass, or you are fitting a shop. Most houses should start with a high-wall.
Are cassette heat pumps noisy?
A well-specified unit is quiet. Poor condensate or a unit sitting in a tight cavity is what you hear. Commissioning matters.
