Common problems
Common heat pump problems we can help with
If your heat pump is doing any of these, it is worth getting it looked at before it gets worse.
Not heating or cooling
Blowing air that is lukewarm or not changing temperature. Often a blocked filter, a low refrigerant charge or a sensor fault.
Water leaking inside
Drips from the indoor unit usually mean a blocked or poorly graded drain line. Turn it off if water is near power.
Error code or flashing light
Most units show a code when something is wrong. Note it down and put it on the form. It helps the technician come prepared.
Strange noises
Rattling, grinding, squealing or loud clicking from either unit can point to a loose panel, a failing fan or a compressor issue.
Bad smell
A musty smell when it starts usually means mould or dirt on the coil and filters. A proper clean normally sorts it.
Won't turn on
Check the remote batteries and the switch at the board first. If it still won't start, it needs a licensed technician.
Heat pump servicing
Why get your heat pump serviced?
A heat pump that is not serviced slowly loses efficiency. Dust builds up on the filters and coil, it works harder to heat the room, and your power bill goes up.
Most manufacturers recommend a service once a year. Regular servicing can also be a condition of the warranty.
What a service includes
What happens during a heat pump service
Every business does it slightly differently, but a proper service normally covers the following.
- Clean or replace the indoor filters
- Clean the indoor coil and fan
- Check and clear the drain line
- Clean the outdoor unit and check airflow around it
- Check electrical connections and controls
- Check the system is heating and cooling properly
Should you repair or replace your heat pump?
Your technician will give you their advice, but this is a useful guide.
Repair usually makes sense when
The unit is under ten years old
Most faults on a younger unit are worth fixing, especially if it is still under warranty.
It is a single part
A fan motor, sensor, drain or circuit board is usually a straightforward repair.
It has been reliable until now
One fault on a unit that has run well for years is not a reason to replace it.
Replacement is worth considering when
The unit is well over ten years old
Older units are less efficient and parts can be hard to find. A new one may cost less to run.
It uses an old refrigerant
Units running R22 cannot be re-gassed with the same refrigerant. Replacement is normally the better call.
The compressor has failed
It is the most expensive part of the system. On an older unit it often makes sense to replace the whole thing.

Heat pump repair questions
Who does the repair?
A local heat pump business in your area. We pass your request to them. They contact you, visit, and do the work.
Can you repair any brand?
Most local heat pump businesses work on all the common brands, including Mitsubishi, Daikin, Panasonic, Fujitsu and Samsung. Put your brand on the form so the technician knows before they call.
How often should a heat pump be serviced?
Once a year is a good rule, or every six months if it runs most of the day or you live near the coast. Clean the indoor filters yourself every few weeks in winter.
Is it safe to keep using it?
If it is leaking water near power, tripping the switchboard or smells of burning, turn it off at the switch and leave it off until it has been checked.
Can I top up the gas myself?
No. Refrigerant work must be done by someone with a refrigerant handling licence. A unit that is low on gas also has a leak that needs finding.
What does a repair cost?
It depends on the fault. The technician will tell you what they find and what the fix involves before they do the work.
